With the delivery of the first Adopta un Hogar home in Quibdó, Grupo Argos, Nicky Jam, and their partners move forward in their commitment to build 1,000 homes.

• The Asprilla family, from the Medrano neighborhood in Quibdó, received the first of 1,000 homes that Grupo Argos and Nicky Jam pledged to contribute to rebuilding the areas affected by the August 10 earthquake. Of these, 500 will be located in Chocó.
• Adopta un Hogar represents investments of more than COP 100 billion, including housing, transportation, and labor, and has already garnered the support of more than 6,000 individuals and 200 companies.
• ABB, Fundación Santo Domingo, Itaú, Pintuco, Rotoplast, Toptec, Distracom, and Haceb are among the partners contributing funding, materials, logistics, and expertise to make the reconstruction possible.
• The initiative will focus its efforts on Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Risaralda, Caldas, Quindío, and Antioquia, in coordination with the National Government, Fondo Milagro, the Ministry of Housing, local authorities, Red Pro, and social organizations with in-depth knowledge of these regions.

One month after the earthquake that struck western Colombia, solidarity is beginning to take the form of newly built homes. In Quibdó’s Medrano neighborhood, the Asprilla family received the first home delivered through Adopta un Hogar, an initiative led by Grupo Argos and Nicky Jam to support the construction of 1,000 homes in Colombia, 500 of them in Chocó.

The home was delivered as part of a coordinated effort aligned with the reconstruction strategy led by the National Government, Fondo Milagro, the Office of the First Lady, the Ministry of Housing, the Government of Chocó, the Mayor’s Office of Quibdó, and other national and local authorities.

The Asprilla family’s home represents the first tangible outcome of a commitment that will require investments exceeding COP 100 billion, including housing solutions, the transportation of materials, and the labor needed to complete the 1,000 planned interventions.

Before construction began, the design of the first home was presented to the family and the community to understand their needs and the features the new house should include. Based on that conversation, the solution was adapted to address not only structural requirements, but also the climate, the surrounding environment, and the community’s cultural and family practices.

The process began with an assessment of the lot and its stability, followed by site preparation and the installation of water and electricity networks. The home was built using a steel-frame system, a lightweight construction technology based on steel profiles that makes on-site assembly more organized and efficient.

A fundamental feature of the model is that the community will not merely benefit from the reconstruction. Local residents will be trained in the construction system so they can participate directly in the work and ensure that some of the knowledge required for reconstruction remains within Chocó.

We want safe, earthquake-resistant, and comfortable homes, but also homes that reflect the way people live. We also want the process to leave something additional behind: knowledge and capabilities within the communities so that they can play a leading role in the reconstruction.”

The first home also demonstrates the collaborative model that Adopta un Hogar seeks to scale throughout the reconstruction process. Grupo Argos and Nicky Jam provided the home; the Colombian National Army contributed construction labor and donated beds and mattresses; Haceb provided the appliances; ABB supplied components for the electrical system; Pintuco donated the paint; Rotoplast provided solutions for the water and septic systems; Itaú and Fundación Grupo Social contributed financial resources; and the Grupo Argos Foundation incorporated a solution to provide access to safe drinking water. The Government of Chocó, the Mayor’s Office of Quibdó, and their technical and planning teams have also played a fundamental role in coordinating efforts across the region and advancing the project.

How the 1,000 homes will be distributed

In coordination with Fondo Milagro, the Ministry of Housing, departmental governments, mayor’s offices, and local authorities, Adopta un Hogar has initially identified the main locations where it will focus its efforts:

• Chocó: 500 homes in Quibdó, Unión Panamericana, Brubatá in Tadó, Samurindó in Atrato, and the district of Opogodó in Condoto.
• Valle del Cauca: 235 homes in Argelia, El Águila, and El Cairo.
• Risaralda: 100 homes in Dosquebradas.
• Caldas: 100 homes in Chinchiná, in coordination with the National Federation of Coffee Growers.
• Quindío: 40 homes.
• Antioquia: 25 homes in Andes and Ciudad Bolívar.

This week, Adopta un Hogar also plans to deliver its second home in Ciudad Bolívar, Antioquia, as part of the progressive rollout of its different construction sites.

Beneficiary families are identified in coordination with mayor’s offices, departmental governments, Fondo Milagro, and the relevant authorities by cross-referencing census data and assessing each household’s specific circumstances. This work is complemented by support from Red Pro and social organizations with knowledge of the regions, helping ensure that families are prioritized according to technical and social criteria.

Adopta un Hogar will continue working alongside the National Government, Fondo Milagro, departmental governments, mayor’s offices, communities, companies, and social organizations to help affected families regain a safe place to call home.
