New Weavers Club in the district of La Playa, Barranquilla: a window for women's empowerment, cultural expression, and community development

14 July 2025
  • A total of 100 women from the neighborhoods of Campo, Villa del Mar La Cangrejera, Canteras, and Adelita de Char will begin strengthening their skills in crochet technique—an ability that not only fosters productive capacities but also builds bonds of trust, leadership, and community collaboration.
  • To date, the Urban Development Business has promoted more than 15 weavers’ clubs in Barranquilla as an alternative to improve the quality of life for over 800 women.

In line with its goal of strengthening the social fabric, preserving artisanal cultural heritage, and boosting local entrepreneurship, Grupo Argos, together with the Chorrera Artisans Association Arte y Tejido, Fundación Gases del Caribe, Ciudadano de Honor, Inpsicon, and community leaders from the Eduardo Santos La Playa district in Barranquilla, officially launched a new Weavers Club in the city on Friday, July 11.

Initially designed for 30 women, the initiative exceeded all expectations and drew the participation of over 100 women from the neighborhoods of Campo, Villa del Mar La Cangrejera, Canteras, and Adelita de Char. The program offers practical training in crochet techniques, enabling the participants not only to develop productive skills but also to strengthen bonds of trust, leadership, and community collaboration.

“At Grupo Argos, we promote projects that create shared value and improve quality of life in the communities we serve. These clubs are a testament to the transformative power of collaborative work and reflect our commitment to women’s empowerment, community development, and the revitalization of local economies.”

Each club will follow a learning path designed by the Weavers Club of Barranquilla and Atlántico and the Chorrera Artisans Association, a nationally recognized organization for its work in artisanal weaving that integrates traditional knowledge with economic development opportunities for its members.

The new Weavers Club aligns with the vision of sustainability and collaborative economy promoted by Grupo Argos and Ciudadano de Honor, where culture and entrepreneurship are seen as key drivers of social transformation. Participants will also have the opportunity to join the Entrepreneurship Fairs organized by Grupo Argos’ Urban Development Business in Barranquilla, expanding their commercial reach and collaborative networks.

This initiative is inspired by the successful model of the Sofía Club, launched in 2022 at the Realismo Mágico Park. What began with just 20 weavers has now grown to include more than 700 women across the department of Atlántico.

With this new chapter in La Playa, the partner organizations reaffirm their commitment to social inclusion, the strengthening of female leadership, and the building of resilient and sustainable communities.
